Here are some quick facts about mental illnesses, and the drugs prescribed for them among adolescents/students and the health effects associated with them.

*The most common mental illnesses that children are treated for are ADD and ADHD. (2)



*More middle class boys tend to be diagnosed with ADD or ADHD than girls. (2)



*More than 75% of methylphenidate prescriptions are written for boys, which makes them four times as likely as girls to take the drug. (5)



*When comparing children with ADHD on medication and children with ADHD that were not on medication, tests like MRI's discovered that the drugs had no effect on the brain volumes of these children; the brain volume only correlates to whether or not a given child had ADHD or not. (1)
